I, Senior Project/ First Draft

In our discussion in class today Dr. Preston was lecturing on how this course is so much more than a class. It is an instruction manual with tools included. He is providing us with everything we need to truly hack our education and make this course our own. He basically said how no matter what we want to do for a career or whatever our passions our, you are able to tie it into the class. He also reinforced the notion that even though he is a teacher and we are the students, our relationship is more than that. He is there to support us and wants to make sure that when we graduate in June, we will have taken advantage of every second of class we had and to set us on the path to success and happiness.

In my journal, I said just one example of how I could tie in one of my passions into the class and make something out of it. I have a passion for helping people to deal with their problems. I enjoy helping those who can't necessarily help themselves with issues maybe they don't quite understand. On Preston's blog he has a section set aside for "Collaborative Working Groups" that basically help to get student run programs up and running and visible to the public. This would be the perfect place to start a group for both anonymous student counselors and their peers to talk about issues privately. This takes away some of the awkwardness of talking face to face, but allows students to get the help and advice they need to make important life decisions, or even just deal with the ones they have already made.

This class is truly one that is rare and even abstract. Dr. Preston is a real innovator in the ever-changing structure of education because he provides the support both morally and logistically for their pursuit of whatever makes them happy, while still educating in a somewhat structured way.
